My one star review is not about the TV show; Wonder Woman is simply awesome. It is to review this particular bundled version, which most likely is just the 3 individual separate sets shrink wrapped together and sold as “The Complete Collection”. Check out your local stores like Target - mine has them for about $15 each.

Good TV Show with a Cute/Awsome looking Actress.

It would be easy to dismiss “Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life” as being a cross being “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and a James Bond movie except for two things. The first is that there is nothing inherently wrong with combining those two elements, even if the genesis of your character is a series of video games. The second is that despite the overwhelming plot similarities between this second Lara Croft film and the first and third Indiana Jones movies, there are actually things going to with the titular character. We are not talking profound psychological development here, but for an action film there is actually something else going on as well.

The main thing, of course, is the action, which is why the James Bond comparisons are so obvious. An earthquake shakes the Greek island of Santorini and the next thing we know Lara Croft (Angelina Jolie) is on the trail of Pandora’s Box. Apparently it was what brought life to Earth and inside it there is one more thing. Not hope, as most versions of the Greek myth tell us, but a plague that will wipe out all life on earth. Lara is interested in the box because her reason d’etre is that: “Everything lost is meant to be found.” But evil scientist Dr. Jonathan Reiss (Ciaran Hinds), a Nobel prize winner who is apparently searching for the perfect poison, wants what is in the box. Along for the ride is Terry Sheridan (Gerard Butler), a charming rogue from Lara’s past who might be the yin to her yang.

Alexander the Great is involved in all of this as well, but that is just exposition. As was the case with the first Tomb Raider film, Lara Croft goes globe trotting, visiting as many continents as possible before the final credits. More importantly, each and every opportunity for putting in some stunts (not to be confused with CG effects) is taken advantage of, including Lara out for a horseback ride. Director Jan de Bont (”Speed”) and first time screenwriter Dean Georgaris have put together a superior sequel, and Jolie is much more comfortable in the role. Lara Croft’s biggest similarity to James Bond is not all the stunts but the overwhelming sense of being cool. No matter where on the planet she finds herself, Lara always knows more than here enemies and has friends close at hand.

But beneath the glamorous adventures and close brushes with death, Lara Craft has a series of reality checks to go through in “The Cradle of Life.” Part of it is professional, since there is growing reason to believe that finding Pandora’s box is not a good idea. But the other part is personal, since Sheridan keeps insisting there is something between them worth pursuing. The common denominator is that both of these issues speak to Croft’s feminine side. Clearly she is all woman, but much more, and being put in the position of being either a modern Pandora or an ordinary woman does not make Lady Croft happy. The endings of these two plot lines might be predictable, but at least they give the character and the movie some depth.

Speaking of being unhappy: This film was banned in China because “it damaged China’s reputation, giving the impression of a country in chaos, with no government and over-run by secret societies.” A movie has to deserve at least four stars for doing something like that.

If you liked the first film in the Tomb Raider series, “Cradle of Life” will deliver just as much fun. The sequel begins with artistocratic archeological adventuress Lady Lara Croft (Angelina Jolie) diving off the coast of Greece, where a volcanic eruption has uncovered the fabled Lunar Temple. Within the underwater temple, Lara discovers a mysterious orb. As with many of her tomb raids, however, things soon go awry, and the orb falls into enemy hands.

Representatives of the British intelligence agency MI-5 recruit Lara to retrieve the orb, which Alexander the Great created as a map to Pandora’s Box. MI-5 fears that a scientist known for creating biological agents will use a plague contained in Pandora’s Box to create weapons of terror. Lara scoffs at MI-5’s offer to send agents to assist her, and insists on an assistant of her own choosing–a possibly untrustworthy mercenary (Gerard Butler) who is her former lover. And thus the quest for the orb begins anew.

Once again, Jolie brings to Lara Croft a terrific mixture of Indiana Jones’ daring and cleverness, James Bond’s class and grace under fire and an acrobatic combat style, wittiness and sex appeal all her own. She makes a very appealing heroine that both men and women can enjoy. At one point, as she is checking from rural China in via cell phone, her assistant asks her what she’s doing, and she coyly comments “Accessorizing” as she straps on automatic weapons and knives.

Lara is a woman used to doing things her way, as evidenced by how unimpressed she acts when the MI-5 agents tell her that the Queen requires her assistance in retrieving the orb. She aims her dry wit equally at her mercenary ex-lover and the thieves attempting to keep control of the orb.

The rapport between Gerard and Jolie is somewhat reminiscent of the repartee once seen on the silver screen between Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell. Although their barbs aren’t quite as rapid fire as “His Girl Friday” dialogue, the tension and lingering attraction between the two add spice to the movie. The question of whether Lara really can trust Terry (Gerard) to not double-cross her, and cut a better deal with the unsavory characters seeking the orb creates additional suspense.

One disappointment in “Cradle of Life” was that the puzzles that Lara must solve to find her way to Pandora’s Box aren’t as complex as the puzzles in the first “Tomb Raider.” Most of the puzzle work is done via computer with Lara sending images back to her assistant to crack back home. The imperative to find the orb and get to Pandora’s Box wasn’t quite the race against the clock involved in the first “Tomb Raider,” where pieces to the triangle that controlled time could only be retrieved during certain moments in a planetary alignment. Consequently, while the need to beat the bad guys to the next step was obviously important, the clock didn’t seem to be running quite as quickly.

Nevertheless, “Cradle of Life” does not disappoint with its breathtaking travelogue-style cinematography and its tricky stunts. A series of gymnastic maneuvers that Lara executes to climb atop the roof of the underwater temple and a motorcycle ride along the Great Wall of China were reminiscent of the settings in the first two Tomb Raider games. In other scenes, Lara flees from her captor among Chinese terra-cotta tomb warriors, and then rappels head first down a sheer cliff. The spiral passageways leading to the hiding place of Pandora’s Box created an eerie and exotic setting.

Overall, “Cradle of Life” is a lot of fun! The love story between Lara and Terry adds a complexity to the action. The exotic settings and the kick-butt stunts add up to a sequel that’s just as interesting to watch as the first. See this on the big screen. While I’m sure the DVD will be good, the sweeping views of China, Greece and Africa won’t translate as well to the small screen. See it now!

Yoji Yamada’s “Twilight Samurai” was an extraordinary treat. Following in similar footsteps, “The Hidden Blade” is again a samurai tale where a lower samurai must weigh matters of principle against what is politically and financially advantageous. Shown at film festivals in Berlin & Newport Beach, the main character is Munezo Katagiri whose sister marries out of the household. Masatoshi Magase who played so romantically as the second love interest in “The Sea Is Watching” does the title role. He’s very sensitive and honest, but a bit out of touch with his own emotional needs. Takako Matsu who has only made 3 films including 2006’s “Suite Dreams” plays the housekeeper Kie. She works hard and lovingly takes care of Katagiri’s house. Matsu’s beautiful good looks and expressive face make her a charmer. Caste issues divide her from the samurai. When Kie marries, her new family abuses and fails to appreciate her. This results in her illness and rescue by Katagiri who barges into the household and rescues Kie from her own husband! Kie is nursed back to health. Meanwhile Yaichiro Hazama is from the same samurai clan and has gone to the big city of Edo where he gets caught in a plot to overthrow the Emperor. He’s brought back home in a basket and imprisoned, rather than being given the dignity of hari kiri. The authorities come to Katagiri and give him the charge of dueling with Hazama, who breaks out of prison and holes up in a rural hut. The lovely Reiko Takashima plays Hazama’s wife and comes to barter with the only commodity she has, her body, to try and save her husband’s life. She goes to the Chief in charge (forgot his title) and makes a similar deal when Katagiri refuses her. Unfortunately, the unscrupulous Chief has no intention of freeing Hazama and fails to inform Katagiri as he has promised Mrs. Hazama he would do. Min Tanaka who played in “Twilight Samurai” is the retired martial arts instructor Toda who gave Katagiri knowledge of a special move called the Devil’s Claw. Now living in a pastoral setting, he gives Katagiri a few last tips. The duel takes place with Katagiri surviving. The Chief suffers justice at Katagiri’s hands with the lightning fast Devil’s Claw dispatching him to the next world. Deciding to follow Toda’s example, Katagiri renounces his pledge as samurai and sweetly approaches Kie who has not remarried and no longer has a caste restriction separating her from the man she obviously loves. There is a real sweetness and innocence in the story of “Hidden Blade” that shows a moral compass. The performances, direction and cinematography are first-rate. Bravo!

I thought that director Yôji Yamada could not possibly top Twilight Samurai, but I was wrong. This is a great film for even those that are not martial arts fans. The acting is great, the screenplay is excellent and believable. Director Yamada also had great cinematographers and music.

Since the story for both Twilight Samurai and Hidden Blade were written by the same author and took place in the same part of Japan, one reviewer unfairly indicated the story was a rehash of the first. Definitely, I disagree with this assessment.

I don’t want to give anything away. For those that are like me, be sure to have a box of tissues handy when you see this memorable film. I rented it and was so taken by the film (even watching it twice during the same weekend), that I purchased the DVD immediately from Amazon.

Jacques Pepin returns in a 3 DVD disc set that is a visual companion to his book of the same name, both a sequel to the original series Fast Food My Way. In a way, the Fast Food series are a testament to a long distinguished career, showcasing how all those years and experience can culminate in the most difficult frontier for any master in his craft: simplicity.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Jacques Pepin: More Fast Food My Way! Click Here

8 Episodes per disc, each beginning with an idea for a quick, throw-together dish appetizer (”minute” recipes), a warm welcome from Jacques and a 30 minute episode comprising of a 1st course, a main dish, and a dessert. Wine pairings are also gently suggested, with type and region noted.

Each show features combinations that are presented as menus at the end of book equivalent. Knowing how to match dishes to compliment the palette is, in itself, an art form.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Jacques Pepin: More Fast Food My Way! Click Here

The recipes have an international expanse (although onion, garlic, “good” olive oil, chives, parsley, and sour cream seem to be the recurring staples), ranging from seafood Paella (tried this recipe: delicious!) to baked lobster loafs using hot dog rolls, sauteed mustard greens with spicy Italian sausage, New England style chowder, middle eastern coucous with veggies, pork medallions in pomegranate sauce, tibetan bread (ready in 15 minutes!) shrimp with cabbage and caviar, almond paste Mont Blanc and Salmon Pizza on lavash bread, and my favorite one, potato gnocchi with eggs and truffles. There is also some simple but surprisingly elegant looking desserts that will sure be a delight to guests, ranging from apricot clafoutis to cherries in Armagnac sauce, and a fancy raspberry tart on cookie dough. Daughter Claudine joins him for a few episodes, providing light banter and added familial warmth. You can get a taste of the menu of this 3 dvd set by having a peek at KQED’s website’s Pepin page.

The basis of Pepin’s “Fast Food” is the edict that you should look at your supermarket as your prep cook. “Make your supermarket work for you!” So whether it be something as obvious as rotisserie chicken (you make the sauce), cream cheese, prepacked salmon, canned caviar, seedless raspberry preserves, or the controversial truffle oil (which Pepin wisely hints, only contains the “essence” of truffles), jarred alcaparrado, pre-cut lobster tails, salsa, you will wisely cut down on your time by using one or two bought, pre-made items. Also, it helps to pre-prepare some of the ingredients to your fast food, whether it be pre-cut, pre-rinsed onions (to rid it of sulfuric acid), chicken stock, or lamb stew cubes.

Keep in mind however, that a big contributing factor to the “fast” in Pepin’s fast food is the instructor himself. Head chef to France’s president de Gaulle, resume entries from Howard Johnson to the Russian Tea Room, departmental dean of New York’s French culinary institute, and cooking professionally for over 60 years, this is also the man who can famously remove every bone from a chicken with merely a slash..AND keep the whole chicken intact… in 20 seconds. As long as you understand this, you won’t feel set back when you have to account for just a tad little additional time in the preparation of Pepin’s “Fast Foods.” Still, consider the time well-spent, because you will definitely be able to dazzle your guests in both taste and presentation. An added treat is seeing some of his complete techniques being demonstrated in practice.

Now, a little about Pepin’s personality. All great artists train us not only to enjoy beauty in life, but also to find new ways of seeing beauty in our surroundings. Pepin’s Masters degree in French poetry certainly contributes to his delight when he comments on the beauty of pieces of vegetables and fruits or his crystalline observation that “the recipe is only the expression of the moment,” a comment that instantly aligns cooking with jazz improvisation. His eye for proportion and balance in composition is evident even down to the way he tops a tomato with a garnish or cuts a skirt steak to show you the insides: it’s almost painting with food. Yet his instructions are casual and his gentle resonant voice is warm and inviting. Pepin sips coffee or wine at the beginning or end of the shows, adding to the welcoming atmosphere. At one point, you can even hear the film crew chuckling when he winks at the camera and says, “don’t tell the guest I ate half his egg.”

You may be able to watch some of these shows online. But with the dvds’ crisp sound quality (the sizzle of a sautee, the knock of knife on chopping block, and of course the instructor’s voice) and excellent resolution and definition, the sensual and beautiful pleasures of cooking is a delightful gift from Jacques Pepin and his way.

Ah, Jacques Pepin….master of all things cooking. This series is wonderful in it’s simplicity. You’ll learn the basics of paring an apple, spatchcocking a chicken and to really make a great hollindaise. Pepin is featured in a simple kitchen with minimal distractions. He doesn’t talk much about anything but the food he’s preparing. (nice change from some of the “gabby” chefs of today). Very good on basic technique and simple food prepration. When you get the box, you’ll think it’s small but there are 13 hours worth on 3 DVDs.

The idea of “Stranger Than Fiction” appealed to me the moment I first heard of it. Harold Crick, played by Will Ferrell, wakes up one day and hears a voice. An omniscient narrator is relating his life with precision and no one can hear that voice but himself. It turns out that the voice is Emma Thompson, playing a famed author who is actually writing a novel about a character named Harold Crick. And it’s the same Harold Crick. What is being put down in fiction is also concurrently happening in real life. It’s a tricky concept, one that I felt might be impossible to pull off effectively. Well, not only does “Stranger Than Fiction” pull it off–it succeeds grandly as a surprisingly thoughtful, amusing, and moving contemplation of life. For Harold must immediately confront his mortality when the narrator informs him/us that he will soon die!

Buy,Download, Or Stream Stranger Than Fiction! Click Here

The complicated narrative of the film is pulled off brilliantly. The overlapping structure necessary to maintain the momentum and cohesion of the film must be attributed to a clever, intricate screenplay. Literate, witty, and real–it’s a real treat. Lots of interesting effects help to pull the two worlds together making even the most mundane moments of Harold’s life visually compelling. The movie’s construction is fascinating and enjoyable.

Will Ferrell reins in his typical “overgrown kid” persona, and plays Harold as a real guy. It’s refreshing and while I’ve never considered him a leading man type–his tentative romance with Maggie Gyllenhaal (while a bit of a stretch) is played very credibly and sweetly. Dustin Hoffman, as a literature professor helping Harold discover what book he’s in, is having a great time. But it’s Emma Thompson that stole my heart. As the author, she is a complete neurotic mess–but as she begins to realize what is happening, something in her transforms. Her character provides much of the film’s insight and it’s most powerfully dramatic acting. It’s a deft balancing act, and as usual–she hit all the right marks.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Stranger Than Fiction! Click Here

After a near perfect movie, we have to bring both stories of Harold to an end. The movie turns into a poignant examination of sacrifice. If Thompson kills Harold in her novel, it will be recognized as a great piece of literature. If she lets him live, the novel will be just another routine bit of entertainment. This art versus commercialism angle is absolutely enthralling, and also surprising since it is raised so late in the film. There are moments of real power as everyone faces important life decisions–but these aren’t false “lessons,” they are genuine emotion that the film has subtly earned.

Ultimately, the ending is exactly what the film wants it to be. While I didn’t find it the most satisfying choice–it is perfect for the movie because by this point the film itself is mirroring the novel within the film. It’s a clever bit of trickery and very unusual. I admired “Stranger Than Fiction” very much and would give it 4 1/2 stars as an original and intelligent treat. KGHarris, 11/06.

A disclaimer: I’ve got a high tolerance for quirky and this film certainly qualifies as such. I loved it, but I love quirky films a lot more than the mainstream moviegoer.

I went to see this movie on a whim and so I didn’t quite know what I was getting into. But a few minutes into it I just KNEW that it was going to be one of my favorites. And, indeed, it is one of the best films I’ve seen in the theater in a while. I smiled throughout the whole of it.

The story is new. The characters are engaging. And the plot is so very random that it just works.

Now I’m one of those people who ALWAYS questions the logistics of say *time travel* and/or *magic doorways* but this film was so very charming that I wasn’t bothered by how incredibly non-sensical it seems: an author *creates* Will Ferrell’s character and can decide if he lives or dies with her *typewriter*?

Oy.

The fact of the matter is, it’s a fairy tale of sorts for a new and modern society. It’s filmed in such an aesthetically astute manner. The actors are at their very best and most endearing. And the writing is wholly engaging.

It’s NOT your typical Will Ferrell movie and if you go into it expecting fart jokes and prat falls, you’ll be disappointed. But if you go into it with an open mind and a receptive heart, I imagine you’ll be quite touched by the ideas it’s trying to negotiate in its sweet and clumsy way.

I finally took advantage of getting what I pay for with my cable company. Prior to Season 3 of Dexter, I watched the first two seasons on DVD (Season One & Season Two). I used to send all this money to my cable company for subscribing to Showtime, and Dexter was never part of my regular TV viewing until 2008. Color me stupid. What was I missing out on?…Only the absolute best show on TV.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Dexter: Seasons 1-3! Click Here

How good is it? Let’s put it this way…I’m actually glad that I hadn’t seen this until DVD, because my wife and I were able to watch the first two seasons in weeks versus like 3 months PER regular season on Showtime. We often watched three episodes in one night on the DVD sets. Alas, I couldn’t wait for Season 3’s release on DVD, so it was one episode of Dexter, one week at a time for Season 3.

So certainly one of the good things about Dexter on DVD is that you don’t need to wait 12 weeks to see a season from start to finish. But certainly the best thing about the series is how well done it is.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Dexter: Seasons 1-3! Click Here

Dexter (played by Michael C. Hall of HBO’s Six Feet Under fame) is a blood spatter analyst with Miami Homicide. It’s his job to help solve murders, and he also happens to moonlight as a serial killer….Just a side note that last part.

The acting in the show is terrific, and the thrills and twists are plentiful. Combine the nature of Dexter’s professional life with his favorite pass-time, and you can bet your carotid artery that there’s plenty of blood in the show too. But rest assured that the show isn’t just about killing. Relationships, family, the inner working of a homicide squad…all of this “stuff” is also packed neatly into the Dexter series and makes the show one of the best on TV that I’ve seen in a long long time.

The major plot involving guest star Jimmy Smits in Season 3 is a bit more of a stretch of reality than were Season’s 1 & 2. But the acting, dialogue and well-written story flow kept the show right up there at the top of my list of TV’s finest.

Add this bloody-good show to your cart. I’d strongly urge newcomers to start from Season 1. I dare you to just try watching Season 1 and then not go for Seasons 2 and 3; I simply don’t believe that anyone could possibly do that.

Side note: At the time of the original writing of this review it was cheaper to buy the first three seasons on Blu Ray individually than paying the price for this package of the first three seasons, but then a few days later it was cheaper to buy this package. So check that before you click on add to cart.

Dexter is a show on Showtime about Dexter Morgan, a Forensic Blood-Spatter spealist with the Miami PD. He’s also has a very dark secret.. that he is a serial killer.. and he works for the police, a perfect cover!

—Without spoiling anything plot related here is a quick synopsis for anyone looking for a good reason to watch this.—

An adopted child from a young age, Dexter and his sister grew up with their loving foster father, who also happened to be an accomplished detective. His father, being a cop and all, sensed something different about Dexter, his desire to hurt things, small animals, ect, his detachment from the world, and lack of emotion toward anything. A smart detective, he recognized this for it was, that his son was heading down the road of a murderer. He does what any loving father would do of course… teach his son everything he knows, and how to get away with it. Realizing that Dexter’s path would lead him only to the electric chair, he can’t bear to see his son die in this way. So he give him a ‘code’ with which to kill by. To only go after the scum of the earth. The murderers, the rapists, the child molestors, the one’s that slip through the cracks of a flawed ‘justice system’. This code Dexter strives to live by, it feeds his insatiable desire to kill, and honors his father’s wishes.

Dexter is a fantastic show that twists your perception of morality, and begs questions of your mind like, can you like this person? Very well written, with convincing narrative and great acting from a nobody cast that you come to know well helps its case. Be aware that this show is run on Showtime, and therefore is not bound by the heavy censoring of regular cable television. (Even though cable censors are joke nowadays) There will be no shortage of gratuitious use of blood, killing and violence. There is also a hefty bit of nudity and sexual content, with some F bombs here and there (mostly from one character). If any of these things offend you, you have been warned. Withstanding those things, nothing should deter you from seeing this entire series, as each season is very well done, and all are worth a five-star rating.

Hope this helps you if you were on the fence. :)

It provides an excellent retort to some of the reckless propaganda in Moore’s movie. It’s intereseting to note that Captain Video provides the only negative review so far. However, his entire commentary is based on associations that the movie has and not the content of the movie. I looked at his other reviews. Pretty predictable stuff: 1 star if it has a conservative slant and 5 stars if it has a liberal slant. He decries this movie for having a conservative bias yet his review of Moore’s film doesn’t admit to any liberal bias! What an intellectual fraud.

If you loved Fahrenheit 9-11, you HAVE to see this. This is an enlightening review of much of what’s said against Bush, by Moore and others, showing what really happened with NO funny editing and presented neutrally.. Judge for yourself, and you’ll come out SURPRISED at what you’ve learned, and be glad you did.

I shows, among other things, full information and proof that Bush really DID win Florida, in spite of what the democrats like to say. And what the Patriot act really is. And much more that your liberal friends don’t know, and don’t want you to know.. They still believe that the Supreme Court voted 5 to 4 against the Florida recount..But it was 7 to 9 ..remember?? And were the blacks prevented from getting to the polls?? There is proof here that they weren’t .

I saw it at a screening in LA, and the reaction was hugely positive, from people on both sides..It doesn’t cause anger, even in partisans.. It enlightens.

This review refers to the Silver Screen Classics Edition(Republic Pictures)DVD…….

A beautiful sequel to “Going My Way”, is now a beautifully transfered to DVD. “The Bells of St.Mary’s” is funny, poignant and will tug at your heartstrings.Father O’Malley(Bing Crosby) has now been assigned to a parochial school that is in dire need of repairs. The school has no money and O’Malley’s job is to assess the possibilites, of perhaps sending the children to another school. He meets with some tough oppostion though, in the form of one Sister Benedict(Ingrid Bergman). She is the no nonsense type, and right away the two have some very different ideas on what’s good for the kids. There is also the problem of a businesman(Henry Travers) who wants the building condemned so he can put up a parking lot for his own employees.Sister Benedict prays for miracle, will she get it?

The story and Ingrid Bergman are charming and delightful and will have you praying with her for that miracle.Bing’s beautiful voice graces the film with song and Henry Travers(It’s A Wonderful Life) is wonderful as always. It’s not too often a sequel equals the original, but with the addition of Bergman, (along with some really adorable kids)and under the direction of Leo McCarey once again, this heartwarming story has accomplished that.

This Silver Screens Classic DVD has done a really nice job with the remastering of this Black and White Classic. The film made in 1945 barely shows it’s age. It is a nice clear picture, and the Dolby Digital Sound is good as well. It contains the original Theatrical Trailer, Has French and Spanish language tracks as well as subtitles, and has captioning in English. It also comes with a little brochure with some facts about the filming. If your looking for some great old classics that look great on DVD to add to your collection, this would be a good one.

Happy Viewing……Laurie

Don’t believe the Amazon reviewer, whoever she is. Crosby’s performance in this picture is astonishing; the fact that he holds the screen with the great Ingrid scene after scene, as he did with Barry Fitzgerald in Going My Way, tells you that; very often he steals their scenes, not with any two-bit mugging but with the forcefulness he brings to the character. Also, that’s nonsense about it being an ode to sentimentality; there is a difference between sentimentality and sentiment, and the latter is what makes this film to compelling no matter how many times you watch it. Leo McCarey and Bing Crosby were both schooled by the Jesuits and they incorporate incidents and characters they knew in their youths. Also, McCarey was THE master of improvisation before John Casavetes and some of the finest sequences–Bergman teaching a boy to box; the children’s pageant; Bing and the cat in the hat–have the timeless enchantment of spontaneous invention. And if there is a musical scene in any movie that is more quietly potent than Bing singing In the Land of Beginning Again (one of Louis Armstrong’s favorite songs, incidentally), I haven’t scene it. A lot of people think they are too sophisticated for the O’Malley films. Pity. I’ve been an admirer for over 10 years and their craftsmanship and candor never cease to amaze me. I wish they would put some of the rarer Crosby films (like the Universal gems, East Side of Heaven and If I Had My Way)and McCarey gems like The Awful Truth and Love Affair) on DVD.

Recently, a friend and I were discussing educational and ethical influences when we were growing up in the 1950’s versus today. She mentioned Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who, in 1798, wrote The Rime of The Ancient Mariner. Both of us had been required to recite parts of the epic poem in high school and in English Literature courses in college. My friend said, “Its messages even might be called metaphysical within today’s context.”

We tried reciting it and only remembered bits and pieces. (I have problems remembering Dr. Seuss.) I said I’d get two copies of the poem so each could read it. That was easy enough, but I was extremely surprised to find it had been made into a film. We looked forward to watching the film to see how it had been interpreted. After all, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner isn’t exactly light reading. After each had read the poem, we watched the film together.

We considered the film a remarkable achievement, especially considering it was made in the 1970’s, before computers, before the so-called “Ken Burns effect,” and before special effects too often began compensating for a lack of substance. Particularly noteworthy are the 19th and 20th century illustrations culled from “lesser known artists,” such as Willy Pogany, the early Hollywood designer.

The film is narrated by Sir Michael Redgrave, whom had taught the poem when he was a schoolmaster, adding a tone of authority and credibility in remaining true to the poem.

Its mastery is in the layers of subtle messages, conveyed without “instructing,” or becoming an oppressive and obvious morality tale. We found it such a refreshing change from today’s ‘in your face’ and ‘clobber them over the head’ mentality. Most of today’s morality messages in film are two-dimensional: extreme violence, murder and mayhem mark the bad. The bad are really, really, bad, and good are super heroes. It is as if human character lacked any nuance. The Rime of The Ancient Mariner is a celebration of the individual, of character, of an appreciation for celebrating all the richness life has to offer, within the larger context of humanity, i.e., man’s capacity to give to others.

Proud of ourselves for having found this “unknown” gem, we then learned it had won the top award in its category five out of six times at “name” international film festivals. Another surprise was learning the film’s director, Raul daSilva, is a recognized authority on early animation, and authored six award winning books about film.

This film’s message is just as relevant today, if not more so, than when Coleridge penned the original epic poem and when Raul daSilva translated it to film. If I still was teaching high school, which I did for five years, I’d grab this one and show it to all my students. There’s a level of richness here that naturally leads to discussion about the big and important issues all of us face, whether in 1798, 1978, or today–in fact, as long as humanity has a spiritual component.

Highly recommended.

I highly recommend this video to individuals, public libraries and for high school and college classic literature classes. This is an excellent film in which creative visualization of a classic poem makes it come alive. We feel the dynamics of the Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s words as spoken by the Ancient Mariner. It is as if we are both the listener and the Mariner. When the dead albatross falls from the Mariner’s neck, we feel we also were transformed through love in our hearts and understanding of our fellow humans. We have hope for a better outcome to the struggles we face in our own world of war and violence. Director Raul daSilva did an outstanding job in making this poem not only understandable but also to arouse our sensitivity. The incorporation of Doré’s illustrations, visual effects of colors, the well-chosen classical music and sounds of the sea all enhanced our senses and deepened our emotional experience with the poem. BRAVO to daSilva and his team. Well done!!

The Growing Up series is the best of the best. I own all three DVD’s now and await the new one called Growing Up: Wilderness which will be out in October of 2008. ALL the episodes are phenominal and worthy of applause! The Growing Up series is my absolute favourite TV show and Animal Planet has done it right! If you or your children love animals, PLEASE do not hesitate to buy this video which is educational and makes us all root for each animals survival and happiness. This series inspired me to volunteer at a local animal shelter which proved to be the best thing I have ever done. Now, I am looking for a new career path to work with animals all the time. Inspiring!
